Interesting article. Very thought provoking which is important to do even when it’s uncomfortable. I felt my mind being stretched by some new ideas that I’ll have to ponder for a while. Thank you for bringing back some similar childhood memories with my dad. Like you, my brother was in the Indian Guides, but I was in the Indian Princesses. While cleaning out my basement, I came across our name tags made from Alphabits cereal glued and shellacked to a piece of bark. I think my father was Red Cloud and I was Little Fawn. During our camping experience, it stormed so each family ended up sleeping in the back of their 70s wood-paneled station wagon. While it definitely kept the two of us warm and dry, it amplified my father’s snoring. (OMG, the snoring! LOL) As you said, one-on-one carefree time with a parent is often a rare occurrence, so it’s worth cherishing. While the program may have been tone deaf in a cultural sense, I still have to give credit to the YMCA for successfully creating and implementing an opportunity for fathers to engage with their kids across the country. What you were experiencing in NY, we were experiencing in IL. That takes some serious organization.

We chose the YMCA Indian Guides in Stratford, CT because it would get our 2 sons time with only their Dad. ❤️🙏
